  1. A Solidarity is a national confederation of 
  2. independent trade unions in Poland, formed 
  3. under the leadership of Lech Walesa Sept 
  4. 1980. An illegal organization from 1981 to 
  5. 1989, it was then elected to head the Polish 
  6. government. Divisions soon emerged in the 
  7. leadership and in 1990 its political wing 
  8. began to fragment (Walesa resigned as 
  9. chairman in Dec of that year).
